Within the R & D department, Lionel is responsible for IT developments of the products on which BIOCORP works. Its role is to research, design and propose solutions to meet the client’s needs. For that, he is assisted by a team he has to manage, which he does in an advisory mode. Indeed, Lionel is very attentive to each of his collaborators and he tries to avoid generating frustration. Explanation: his colleagues often want to test new technologies but, at the fast pace that everything evolves in this area, it is essential to assess positively the risk incurred by switching to a new technology that hasn’t proved anything yet. Arbitration has to be made between an innovative and promising techno and an older but efficient one. Lionel tries to stay tuned while framing his team. In the same way, he strives to help them take a step back and broaden the framework in order to achieve the objectives with a reasonable investment. Lionel relies on the very sharp knowledge of each one and brings a more global knowledge and a necessary perspective to any project management. And the method is proven, favored by the great benevolence of Lionel.

He especially appreciates autonomy he has in his work within a firm that he describes as very human, as well as the total absence of routine thanks to very varied tasks and items. Analysis and synthesis are in a way his core business since he strives to synthesize problems in order to circumscribe them so as to design a solution.

His main advice to a young employee would be to take care of the communication aspects in the broad sense, whether in exchanges between colleagues or reporting on a project: if we communicate easily, we understand each other and we find solutions.

And when he’s not in the office, you might meet Lionel on a motorcycle on a country road …

Sylvain is driven by a thirst for learning and progress, both in his personal and professional life. This is a driving force in the success of his mission. He works on Easylog’s embedded software; his role is to participate in the understanding and translation of the functional needs of the product into a documented technical version, as well as to the technical implementation and verification… To imagine and propose solutions, implement product features, build solutions together and make pre-requisites possible: this is his greatest satisfaction on a daily basis.

He is very attentive to listening to other people, to the market or to technologies related to his expertise. Curiosity – in the noble sense of the term – is thus a major component of his job because it is essential for him to be attentive to changes to move forward. This requires a lot of adaptability since one must succeed in adopting the novelties and taking ownership of language developments. Finally, an important point of his job is the exchange since a project is structured around a set of collaborators. He recognizes that he’s lucky to be part of a team that manages to circulate ideas, enriching themselves with the gray matter of others…

He strongly advises young recruits not to hesitate to share their problems instead of being stuck on their own. And one of the foundations for progress is, according to him, to work on personal projects of programming: it seems to be the best mode of learning since it requires to stay informed of the permanent evolutions via an organized monitoring, and to adapt permanently.

Sylvain would be curious to talk to Travis Pastrana, an American motorsport rider and former world freestyle motocross champion, to find out what drove this man to try and win a double motocross backflip, for the first time in the world in 2006. Was it only a crazy bet of a teenager or the result of a series of precise calculations and meticulous preparation upstream? Anyway, his career is impressive…

In the shoes of… Gaël, R&D Trainee

When Gaël chose to do his end-of-studies internship at BIOCORP, he didn’t really know what to expect. When Gaël chose to do his end-of-studies internship at BIOCORP, he didn’t really know what to expect. In any case, he was far from suspecting that he was going to find such a collaborative spirit and that his mission would have a real importance in the achievement of the Easylog project. Indeed, two months after arriving, he says that the team assists him in his mission, as well as he tries to achieve his job, which gives him a lot of satisfaction.

Gaël works on magnetometer signal processing and the application of classification algorithms. Impossible to give further details without touching the confidential aspects of the project…

According to him, the 3 strengths of his role in the company are:

Complementarity: Gaël brings a fresh look and new skills to the team and he is fed with his colleagues’ expertise. Mutual assistance is omnipresent and greatly contributes to the progress of the project.

It is often said that curiosity is a bad thing, but it’s not true as part of an internship because it is imperative to get out of his cocoon to discover new ways of working and ways of advancing different. Going out of his comfort zone could be a real challenge for Gaël, but it’s doing pretty well in the end!

Finally, Gaël quickly understood that a key of the professional environment lies in taking initiative: everyone has to play his part, it’s just a question of measure … This combination of autonomy and guidelines makes the interest of this specific professional experience.

The Cartesian spirit of Gael is summarized in this sentence, which was said by one of his professors in scientific prep: “Considering a complicated problem, see a succession of simple problems”. He explains that we must put things into perspective, step back to analyze and treat problems one after the other.

Despite being a trained scientist, Gaël is also an artist at heart. He would like to meet the artistic director Mark E Miller, who has had the courage to make his own choices and succeeds today in living with his passions, namely photography and video, in sharing his slices of life and his travels on YouTube. The living proof that one can live fully and happily by being oneself, but you have to dare taking risks…

Arrived at BIOCORP in last January, Sylvaine is in charge of marketing and communication: coporate, products, financial com, internal com, press relations, social networks … She especially appreciates the diversity of tasks in her job since no day is like another.

Her role in the company lies on the following 3 axes:
– Relational: it is the very basis of the communicating function. “If you don’t show any curiosity for people and do not have the desire to exchange, better change jobs!” Listening to human, market and trends seems to be one of the keys of this job…
– Structure: understand, study, analyze, build a strategy or a plan of action and synthesize are the bases of the profession and this can not be done without a minimum of rigor and organization. “We still often hear that communication is not a job because it’s like having fun and everyone would be able to do it… I enjoy joking with my colleagues pretending to colour, cut / glue or do playdough according to the days of the week! ”
– Autonomy: it has only been 3 months since she joined BIOCORP and there is a lot to do! She recognizes her chance to have the confidence of the team, and her experience allows her to advance independently.

Her main professional challenge lies in the fact of always having to question herself, in order to progress and not to remain fixed in its certainties or beliefs despite the comfort. She hates immobility and people who are so sure of themselves that they are sclerotic in their function, so she does everything to avoid that! She would advise a young employee to dare while remaining humble, to consider that nothing is never perfectly mastered and that there is always room for improvement, while learning to trust each other. And above all, to interact with the team.

She does not hesitate when asked if she has a mantra: “What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger”. No matter the trials, personal or professional, the point is to keep only the positive.

If she had the opportunity, she would like to meet Mathieu Ricard. This doctor in cellular genetics who became a Buddhist monk in a Tibetan monastery is also the official French interpreter of the Dalai Lama. She would be curious to understand his radical change of trajectory, his choice to branch off to spirituality and this lifestyle apart. It emanates a great wisdom of this man and a real serenity, to the extent of her photographs sublimating nature and its riches …

In the shoes of… Abdessamad, Mobile App Developer

While he concedes that he is pulled out of bed by his alarm clock in the morning, just listen to Abdessamad talking about his job to understand that he is a true passionate about technology. He also admits that he can’t help but research and take notice of any new resonance in the Geeks’ world… And he assumes this geek label! His curiosity about technos is very important in his job because being interested in news and various developments in language and coding leads any developer to perfect his weapons and build skills. Abdessamad is currently working on the iOS app for Easylog, a project that requires the support of various profiles with complementary skills. That’s why rigor and interaction are two fundamental components of his daily job. Like any team work, unthinkable to work all alone: consultation is required, and we must take into account the constraints in place to follow and comply with the rules of coding. That’s why Abdessamad advises young recruits to be interested, to be curious, and not to stay in one’s corner …

The continual evolution of computer languages and the constant innovation of technologies are strong drivers in his desire to go further and progress. Abdessamad emphasizes the fact that he enjoys building a solution from scratch, with the satisfaction of a final rendering. It is highly rewarding, even if in the meantime he admits sometimes experiencing phases of discouragement when he stumbles on some issues. He knows, however, that he always ends up finding a solution… This finally illuminates his motto, certainly unearthed as a joke, but ultimately perfect and speaking to the greatest number: “Hakuna matata! “: duly noted!

“When we want, we can”: the motto poses the character. And personality, that’s not what Adrien misses! He puts his energy at the service of the team. “When we want, we can”: the motto poses the character. And personality, that’s not what Adrien misses! He puts his energy at the service of the team. Responsiveness is a strong element of the qualities required in his job, and we can count on it to meet urgent needs and requests that may occur in the field of equipment in the broad sense. Since the installation of BIOCORP in its new premises in early March, it must be said that Adrien had to abandon his first task as a IT developer in order to focus on the network infrastructure needs of the company. He also has a good relationship and attentive listening, which allows him to hear and analyze the needs of the team so as to find the best solution. Another key aspect of its mission is the technological watch since it is essential to be constantly informed of what is happening on the market, to know the latest techno, the evolution of coding elements …

His job as a developer leads him to work regularly on innovative projects such as the iOS app for Easylog. This is a constant challenge, especially when the project is in the exploratory phase. Adrien likes discovering new things, learning every day and making steady progress. The various stages of progress of a project lead logically to gain confidence in its technological choices.

It’s been 1.5 years since Adrien joined the BIOCORP team and he really appreciates the good atmosphere that prevails in the offices. That’s why, to a new employee that would join the team, he would give a simple advice: “do yourself a favor and do everything to be part of the team. The rest will come naturally because, being integrated, we get help and the work is done serenely “.

He also applies his motto to his sporting approach. When moving to the new premises in Cournon d’Auvergne, Adrien set a goal of coming to work some days by bike, covering a distance of 25 km A / R. And, we checked, his bike has no electric assistance: Adrien moves on thanks to his desire to move forward!

Arrived at BIOCORP in February for a 6-month internship, Pierre quickly became part of the R & D team. His main quality is curiosity: Pierre is eager to know, he shows curiosity and does not hesitate to ask a lot of questions since he likes to get to the bottom of things. It is not surprising that he readily quotes Marie Curie: “In life, nothing is to be feared, everything is to understand”…
He is also teeming with new ideas… which serves him strongly in his mission since he is working on an augmented reality project to see how a BIOCORP add-on can be installed on a medical device and then connected to the device app. The final goal of the rendering is as much educational, explaining the instructions for use to patients, as marketing, to serve as a demo on exhibitions for example.

Its driving role on this project is nourrished by both autonomy and consultation; his colleagues don’t hesitate over advising and guiding him when he has doubts on some points. And Pierre especially appreciates this cooperative spirit that reigns within the team, thus offering everyone the opportunity to have a transversal vision of the department activity. To tell you the truth, he did not really expect to be that much trusted during an internship! He enjoys feeling free while being guided …

According to him, the key words of his role at BIOCORP are: implication, innovation and curiosity. In short, Pierre puts a lot of passion into what he does, and he’s used to give himself thoroughly on projects that are close to his heart. He therefore wants logically to have his finalized project adopted, then make it feasible on a larger scale.

A keen astronomy enthusiast, Pierre would like to meet Thomas Pesquet, to whom he has great admiration. They would discuss about the 6-month stay of the astronaut on the International Space Station and what he has humanly learned. In short, Pierre has his head in the stars, but his feet strongly stay on the ground …

When Emmanuel arrives at the office in the morning, he usually has his head full of new ideas and in any case a strong desire to give life to innovations and to progress in its learning and expertise. As a hardware and software electronics engineer, Emmanuel is currently working on the evaluation of new sensors and tests of intelligent functions of electronic cards.

His business approach is articulated around 3 main axes: team, innovation and pragmatism. Without having to enter the details about some very specific tasks supported by the other members of the project team, Emmanuel has a pivotal role since he synthesizes knowledge allowing him to exercise a broader and global approach on a device. This concentric role is made possible by the teamwork prevailing in the structure, and he especially appreciates these talking moments, which take place in a spirit of caring and cohesion. He is happy to point out that no one takes all the credit, but everyone is moving forward with a common goal for BIOCORP.

His main driver is innovation and he he appreciates the process of constantly having to find a solution that best meets the client needs. Fortunately, Emmanuel exudes curiosity and a taste for challenge. It is consistent that he endorsed this sentence of Napoleon: “impossible is not a French word”! Sprinkle above all this a good dose of pragmatism because, he confesses, Emmanuel likes simple things and doesn’t see the usefulness of complicating the process. He therefore addresses each new concept by wondering first what is the simplest way to provide an optimal solution.

Since he practices tennis, he would like to share a diner with Gael Monfils if the opportunity was given to him. He says he likes his style of play, admire his casual but respectful attitude coupled with combativeness on the court, emphasizing that the tennis player can throw himself on a ball that both spectators and his opponent think lost and put it back into play. You said “impossible is not a word?“

It has been five years since Alain manages the connected objects R&D department. Or let’s rather say that he animates the service, since he is a team leader: never short of ideas, he makes a point of honor to give life to the most ambitious projects and to motivate his team encouraging them to excel every day.

Not surprising then that he mentions cohesion, motivation and creativity to define his role within the company. While he emphasizes that his primary role is to think about new things, to suggest new products or uses, he insists on the importance of teamwork and counts on the emulation caused by the concrete implementation of a new project. It seems important to him to find challenges to motivate his team and to favor an atmosphere and a framework for well-being. He thus privileges the moments of exchanges between collaborators, even if he sometimes has to deal with some reserved temperaments, and explains that the essential link to the cohesion is built by the dialogue.

Naturally benevolent, he strives to explain to young recruits that skills are just as important as know-how, if not more to the extent that it is not improved as easily. It is indeed easier to improve one’s technique than to adapt one’s behavior in a professional environment whose keys are adaptation, listening and involvement.

The challenge is certainly one of the key words of his professional world. He readily admits that his engine lies in endangering in the sense that he likes to be confronted with new situations for which he will have to think and think in order to find an adequate solution. He recognizes that he flourishes in this constant exercise of questioning and necessary adaptation, and fears above all the routine that seems to be his worst enemy. He is not short of examples to illustrate his point… Alain has the soul of a builder: he likes to start from nothing, design and build.

He naturally appreciates the freedom he enjoys in his work, the opportunity he has to exceed the framework and the responsibilities entrusted to him both in the managerial and strategic fields.

To conclude, no wonder that he would choose, if given the opportunity, to share a dinner with the explorer Mike Horn, whom he confesses to admire because “nothing stops him, he has an excellent mindset and dare do new things “.

Matthieu joined the BIOCORP team at the end of his studies at SKEMA-Lille, 10 months ago. He works on the “connected products” part and his role is to seek new business partners, beyond the traditional partners that are pharmaceutical companies, to position on new therapeutic areas.

The 3 words retained by Matthieu to define his role at BIOCORP are the contact, the image and the ideas. Indeed, the relationship is essential in his work, and the contact is generally initiated visually, hence the importance of first impression left to an interlocutor, as well as the speaking quality, empathy and persuasion. He also stresses the importance of bringing new ideas and the virtues of questioning when viewed constructively. Matthieu is indeed a guy who asks himself many questions daily to question himself, improve his work and acquire skills.

According to him, “who does not try anything has nothing” and he plans, why not, to start his own business in a few years. But for now, he admits he appreciates the autonomy he enjoys in his daily mission and the high degree of consultation that is the law in the team.

Matthieu is curious about people and things. Every morning, he admits that when he wakes up, he is delighted that a new day awaits him and knows that it will be interesting, both professionally and personally. In his private life, he rarely plans things because he appreciates the fact that unforeseen events occur and surprise him, usually in a pleasant way.

Finally, if he could share a meal based on junk food, his own sin, with the personality of his choice, he would opt for Joaquin Phoenix. They could talk about the bold choice of the actor in 2010 to withdraw from the Hollywood business by declaring he wanted to devote himself exclusively to music for 2 years: this hoax allowed him to shoot with Casey Affleck a documentary film (“I’m still there “”) pointing to some existing maneuvers in the Hollywood system.

Since he degreed in electronics engineering, Alexandre has been designing and developing electronic systems with high security constraints for over 7 years. Open to the world, he chose to reconcile his career and his desire to travel by working in London, Brussels, Milan and Sydney before joining BIOCORP 2 years ago.

At BIOCORP, Alexandre has a transversal role on all R&D projects since he intervenes from the prototyping stage to the production of electronic cards. He especially worked on Easylog, Inspair and Onejet.

His role is to design innovative technical solutions. He by the way insists on the need to go out of the box, keep abreast of latest technological innovations to seek inspiration and finally always consider the most pessimistic situations in order to adapt to all cases.

To him, it is essential to constantly show a sincere curiosity and advises young graduates to show humility by not hesitating to ask even basic questions to finally always progress in a technical field increasingly rich and complex.

If given the opportunity to meet the personality of his choice, he would eventually choose Elon Musk to address mainly engineering and ethic topics.

Paving the way for a new safety standard

NewGuard Biocorp for prefilled syringes

Enhancing safety for syringe use has been an increasing concern for pharmaceutical companies. Still all too often, the handling of prefilled syringes (PFS) leads to needlestick injuries. For this reason, Biocorp has been developing NewGuard™: an integrated passive safety device that gives
protection before, during and after the injection process.
Eric Dessertenne, COO at Biocorp, tells that NewGuard™ “is very different from the competition because the other safety devices are add-on devices and require an additional step after the filling process of the syringes, which is to assemble the safety system and put the syringe in it. With NewGuard™, the pharmaceutical companies receive a ready-to-fill syringe, with the safety device already assembled in the syringe.”
NewGuard™ answers user requirements and could be considered one of the most cost-effective solutions on the market. The product has a low TCO thanks its simple design and standard components – as well as its ready-to-fill process compatibility, reducing indirect assembly costs that could occur on pharma company’s sites.

Newguar combines two functions in a single product: the function of a rigid needle shield (RNS) and the function of a safety device. The ultra-compact version fits 0.5 mL and 1 mL PFS and a specific version is available for 1 mL short and 2.25 mL syringes. Unlike bulky systems, NewGuard’s thin shape doesn’t affect the injection process and is easy to handle.

Switching to connected devices is a much debated topic but what is the real value behind these new solutions?

The shift from product-centered and cost-based medicine to patient-centric and value-based medicine is already in motion. In this new context, Biocorp does not perceive devices as instrumental to the treatment, but as part of the treatment. Thus, a connecting device does not mean adding new functionalities, it means providing integrated treatment solutions, which incorporate:

  • A drug delivery system, to meet the primary function of such devices
  • A treatment management tool, to embrace this new patient centric era
  • Automatic generation of treatment data, to demonstrate treatment efficacy and prove value

In this article, Arnaud Guillet, Business Development Associate, and Eric Dessertenne, Head of Commercial Operations & Business Development, both of Biocorp outline the potential value of the data that can be collected from integrated devices, not only for pharma companies but also for patients and payers.

The smart sensor to convert inhalers into connected devices to help patients with Asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD)

ISSOIRE, France, October 6th, 2016 – BIOCORP (FR0012788065 – ALCOR / PEA‐PME eligible), a French company specializing in the development and manufacturing of medical devices and smart drug delivery systems, today announces the launch of Inspair, the smart sensor which converts inhalers into connected devices to help patients with Asthma or COPD.

“Biocorp’s objective is to develop innovative solutions in order to improve treatment compliance by patients suffering from chronic diseases. Significant applications have been developed in diabetology, endocrinology and neurology with the Datapen and Easylog devices, and our new sensor Inspair also positions us in the area of chronic lung diseases which affect an increasing number of people in need of new solutions to improve compliance”, said Jacques Gardette, Biocorp’s Founder and CEO

Asthma is a chronic disease which affects the respiratory tracts: it is characterized by an inflammation and irritation of the bronchial tubes which overreact to various triggers, and causes attacks with typical identifiable symptoms: difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, dry cough or wheezing.
Asthma is a disease lived by 4 million people in France and 334 million in the world1, and which can rapidly affect the patients’ daily lives if it is not carefully controlled. The compliance and monitoring of the disease are all the more necessary in that a poor management of asthma can rapidly lead to severe asthma responsible for more than 500,000 emergency hospitalization and 1,000 to 1,500 deaths every year in France2. The French health insurance estimates that nearly six in ten people with asthma have inadequate control of their disease and treatment3.
COPD is a chronic lung disease which develops slowly and is characterized by an airway obstruction. It is different from Asthma and usually affects older people suffering from prolonged intoxication, mostly because of smoking (90%). COPD affects about 3 million people in France, and is responsible for more deaths than HIV or Influenza4. A fastidious treatment follow-up with inhaler and/or bronchodilator medication is thus required to reduce symptoms and improve the patient’s quality of life.

Inspair brings an innovative and effective response to the needs of these two pathologies: it acts directly on the treatment compliance and also strengthens the connection between the patient and the medical staff who can provide a real-time therapeutic follow-up. Inspair is a smart sensor capable of converting any pressurized metered dose inhaler into a connected device: it is then able to record data related to the inhalations and to assure an optimal management of the treatment (mastering of the inhalation technique). Equipped with miniaturized sensors and electronic card, Inspair fits on most MDI mouthpieces on the market using specific adaptors. The system automatically records data related to daily inhalations, ensures the right preparation of the canister (shake before usage), assesses the coordination of actuation with inhalation (“hand-mouth” coordination) and also provides with useful guidance throughout the inhalation steps.
Inspair acts on the key levers of the integrated therapeutic education which lowers hospital admissions and calls to emergency services, reduces the frequency of the attacks and other symptoms, and improves the patient’s daily comfort. More than a simple tool for treatment, Biocorp’s connected device becomes an integral part of it.
Still following its Intellectual Property strategy, providing the company with a key competitive advantage, Biocorp has deposited a series of international patents that ensure its full ownership, proof of anteriority and exclusive rights over the exploitation of Inspair.

– This collaboration is part of the project “Health innovation for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes” launched by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Regional Health Agency for Rhône-Alpes (ARS) and Bpifrance. In line with its development in e-health, BIOCORP extends its expertise to a new therapeutic indication: Parkinson’s disease.  Civil Hospices of Lyon (HCL) will bring their health care expertise at different steps of the project deployment

ISSOIRE, France, September 27th, 2016 – BIOCORP (FR0012788065 – ALCOR / PEA‐PME eligible), a French company specializing in the development and manufacturing of innovative medical and drug delivery devices, announces today the launch of APOKONNECT in partnership with Aguettant, laboratory specialized in the development, manufacturing and commercialization of essential medicines for hospitals. The APOKONNECT project selected by the Regional Health Agency (ARS), the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region and Bpifrance, will combine the expertise of BIOCORP and Aguettant to improve the medical care and follow-up of patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

The Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease with very disabling motor symptoms, which affects around 200,000 people in France (25,000 new cases diagnosed each year1). Its therapeutic care is complex and requires high intensity care, especially in the case of motor fluctuations2 and demands a regular patient monitoring. The innovative APOKONNECT project will rely both on APOKINON®, an apomorphine self-injection pen developed by Aguettant, and on Easylog, the connected device developed by Biocorp. By connecting patients to healthcare professionals involved in the treatment, it will enable improvements of the patient’s medical care and ease the follow-up of the ambulatory treatment by apomorphine.

By gathering data related to patients’ treatment and symptoms on a tablet computer or smartphone via a secured app, this innovative treatment will not only help improve the treatment compliance and patients’ life, but will also increase their autonomy and lead to the development of “homecare” while staying connected to healthcare professional in real-time.

The study, carried out within the framework of the APOKONNECT project, will run for 19 months and include the system integration, different studies to assess the daily use and the preparation of the deployment. The tests, firstly undertaken at a regional level, will then be deployed on a larger scale. Financed by the Regional intervention fund of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Innovation Fund of Rhône-Alpes, namely the Social Innovation Funds, and Bpifrance’s financial apparatus, the project will widely contribute to the industrial and economic development of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and will help create employment. All the stakeholders of the project as well as their R&D and industrial activities are based in this region.

“Biocorp’s developments, namely in the e-health field, have always been driven by one major stake: improve the healthcare of patients suffering from chronic diseases. We wish to bring efficient and durable systems dedicated to the improvement of patients’ daily life and which contribute to the enhancement of the healthcare and medical support. The Parkinson’s disease, which is a new therapeutic indication covered by Biocorp, opens new business perspectives and confirms our strategic development. We are pleased to collaborate with Aguettant and all the partners involved in this promising project”, commented Jacques Gardette, Biocorps’ CEO and Co-founder.

“Aguettant has been a key player in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease for many years. Our leading product APOKINON® and collaboration with French neurologists have driven improvements in the healthcare of this pathology. The APOKONNECT project fits into this framework and will combine Aguettant’ and Biocorp’s potential for innovation, the expertise of our academic teams involved in the medical progress and the globalization of our therapeutic offer”, declared Eric Rougemond, Aguettant Laboratory’s CEO.
